Fair Trade

Fairtrade logo Salford City College is a Fair Trade college, wholly committed to supporting Fairtrade and takes part in a variety of activities and initiatives to support this cause.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.  By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers.  It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Faritrade products are sold in all college refectories, talks are given to students to raise awareness of the cause and the Salford City College Football Academy now only use Fairtrade footballs in their games.

The college also has its own Fairtrade policy which is signed-up to and supported by the Principal and governors and is reviewed by Fairtrade focus groups in each centre.

Thirsty Planet

Thirsty Planet Logo

Thirsty Planet water is dedicated to bringing clean water to millions of people in sub Saharan Africa. They work exclusively with Pump Aid, a UK charity with twelve years experience in delivering sustainable and cost effective solutions to provide clean water to impoverished communities.

Thirsty Planet water is sold across Salford City College and for every two 500ml bottles sold, Thirsty Planet funds 15,500 litres of clean water in Africa.

From sales of bottled water at the college, five water pumps have been built in Malawi in the last 2 years, with a further pump having recently been confirmed, bringing the college’s total to six.

Thirsty Planet has raised over £1,100,000 for Pump Aid since March 2007 and over 4,400 water pumps have been built so far. One pump produces 10,000 litres per day for fifty years so is a fantastic and long-lasting resource for those who need it.
