Student Finance Information
Introduction
If you’re going into higher education, there’s money available to help with the costs. You won’t have to pay anything back until you’ve left your course and you’re earning – and you may qualify for support that doesn’t need to be paid back at all.
Full information about financial and other support for students is also available from: -
Study first Payback when you’re earning
There’s a student finance package available to help with the costs of higher education. The main sources of help for full-time students are:
- Student Loans and grants from the government
- Bursaries from universities and colleges
If you take out a Student Loan from the government, you won’t have to start paying it back until you’ve left your course and are earning more than £15,000 a year. and any help that you get through a grant or bursary doesn’t have to be repaid at all.
Working out how much you’ll get and making your application
The pages within ‘Student finance: what you can get’ will help you work out how much financial help you’ll get. Elsewhere in the ‘Student finance’ section, you’ll find details on how to apply, and how and when you’ll repay any student loans you take out.
Eligibility for financial help
Before you apply for student finance, you need to check if you and your course are eligible. The rules on eligibility can be complicated, and the information on this page doesn’t cover all circumstances.
But it offers a general guide on whether you’ll be eligible for student finance if you:
- are doing a higher education course - like a first or ‘undergraduate’ degree - or a postgraduate course of Initial Teacher Training
- normally live in England, and
- are studying anywhere in the UK

Extra help for students with children
If you’re a full-time higher education student with dependent children, you may be able to get extra financial help. The Childcare Grant can help with childcare costs, and the Parents’ Learning Allowance with costs related to your course. Other help includes Child Tax Credit and the Access to Learning Fund.
Financial help for parents in Higher Education
Full-time students with children may qualify for extra financial help on top of the standard student finance package. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to get:
- the Childcare Grant (to help with childcare costs)
- the Parents’ Learning Allowance (to help towards course costs)
- help through the Access to Learning Fund (if you’re in financial difficulty)
- Child Tax Credit
The information on this page is only a general guide to the financial help available if you have children. For more details about the extra help you can get, download a copy of the booklet 'Childcare Grant and other support for full-time student parents in higher education' [pdf 1042k].
